The European Spa Tradition
European spa tradition consolidated over the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries through formal massage schools in Sweden, France, Germany, Austria, and Russia. The unifying philosophy: massage is a calibrated, oil-based, table-bound technique focused on circulation, relaxation, and muscular release through long flowing strokes. Per Henrik Ling formalised what is now called Swedish massage in early-1800s Sweden. French aromatherapy, pioneered by Gattefossé, brought essential oils into structured therapeutic use. German bodywork traditions influenced what is now called deep tissue. Russian-tradition massage, deeply influenced by both Swedish and German foundations, refined slow-paced full-body protocols. At Ego European Spa, all of these threads come together in a single eight-technique menu, each delivered by a therapist trained in the relevant European foundation.
